The Power Of Collective Movement

In the annals of American history, the struggles and triumphs of women in labor movements have often been overlooked or sidelined. However, a closer examination reveals the pivotal role that women, particularly those from marginalized and disenfranchised communities, played in shaping Rhode Island's labor landscape.

The fight for equity continues

From the historical textile mills of Pawtucket to the now bustling streets of Providence, their voices have echoed resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

The 19th century saw the rise of the textile industry in Rhode Island, particularly in cities like Pawtucket. Women, often from working-class backgrounds, formed the backbone of this burgeoning industry. However, their labor was fraught with exploitation and injustices. Historical records from publications like "The Pawtucket Times" and "The Providence Journal" document instances of long working hours, low wages, and hazardous working conditions endured by these women.

The struggle for equal and equitable opportunity continues today.

It's Our Time

Despite the persistent and evolving challenges faced by women in the trades, Rhode Island women have, and continue to, organize themselves into coalitions and advocacy groups, demanding fair wages, jobs, and improved working conditions.

We are here to fight beside them, and to build with them.
